Disclaimer: I am not an expert and I certainly don’t have the perfect English. I don’t even know all of the rules for subject-verb agreement. I also do make a lot of mistakes but I try to at least sound alright using this language. Again, these are things that have personally helped me while I try to improve myself.
1. Listen to the radio Before, using social media isn’t one of my options to kill some time. We didn’t have wifi then and whether you have twitter or not didn’t really matter. So what I would do whenever I was bored was to listen to the radio. Not the “pang-masa” stations but those where the DJs talk in English. My favourites were Magic 89.9, Monster Radio RX 93.1, and Mellow 94.7. I even had favourite DJs and shows then so I knew what time to tune in. You can also try this next time. Instead of just listening to the music, listen to the DJs and learn from them. I even remember those times when I didn’t know some of the words the DJ would say so I would look it up my dictionary. 2. Watch Foreign TV Shows and Films This is very effective for children. They are still young, their minds are fresh and they can learn as much language as they want to. This is scientifically proven I wished I was able to learn more languages when I was younger. My cousin is a living proof. He was exposed with English cartoons and his family would watch foreign films all the time, so even if they didn’t teach him how to speak in English, he was still able to adopt it. It also applies to everyone, not just kids. If we watch more foreign shows and films, we get used to it. Some people can even adopt the accent. 3. Read books written in English I grew up reading English novels. It definitely helped me. The same thing with the radio, when there are some words I don’t understand I look them up on a dictionary. It’s good to have something to read because you can really see how the sentences are constructed. They are definitely more formal than the ones you just hear. 4. Practice Write in English, tweet in English, think in English, talk to people in English. Basically do things in English. You have to practice to be good at something. The same thing goes with learning Mandarin. If you want to learn the language, you have to use it. You can’t just attend a Mandarin class and then after the discussion, you won’t even use it outside. You will forget it so you have to practice. I found something on Messenger app where you can practice your English by talking to a bot. If you have social media accounts, you can also follow people and interact with your international friends.
